  • Something to tell the world!

Hi. I'm Alistair. I'm 18 years old and live in New Zealand. I like history, chess, football (soccer) and improv. Please feel free to drop me a message if you'd like to talk about anything.

  • Personal skills

I believe I have a 'skill' of knowing at least a little bit about most things. I am also okay at chess and public speaking.

  • I always enjoy talking about...

I always enjoy talking about many things. Football/Soccer and chess would be a stand out but as I like to learn I enjoy talking about anything. If you want to talk to me about it I would be happy to talk about it.

  • A trick or piece of advice

It is a tough time for everyone right now but if we unite, stay strong and look out for each other we can get through this. Kia Kaha!

  • My proudest accomplishments

I know it is probably not my best accomplishment but it is my proudest... Building my high school chess club from a 2 person club to regional champions and going to the national tournament. I was not the best player, but the work that went into it, convincing teenagers to try chess 😂... It was fulfilling and I learnt so much about people and life from it.

  • Improving the school system

I wish chess was taught in schools. Also, I think that schools should be focused less on tests and more about learning.

  • Cities and countries I have visited

I was born in Singapore but live in New Zealand. I have visited the UK a bit as I have relatives there and have visited Japan.

  • My interests in other cultures

Anything and everything. I love random interesting facts and useless facts and I love learning new things.

  • I'm an expert at...

I am an expert at knowing countries' flags. I am good at a lot of things but am not an expert. I realise right now that you are (probably) thinking how boring, this guy is boring but honestly I have many interests that are a lot less boring. I am just not an expert in those areas.

  • I wish people knew more about...

History. I am a firm believer in the theory that states that if you don't learn the lessons of history you are destined to repeat them. If you look over history you can see many examples of people repeating the same mistakes.

  • Making the world a better place

    1. End Covid-19
    2. Get rid of Nukes
    3. Leave guns to the armies
    4. Negotiate with the Muslims in 'terrorist' groups. In the western world we don't realise that we often screwed them over first and these 'terrorist attacks' are often justified.
    5. Encourage people to get penpals.

  • A personal challenge

In mid 2019 I injured my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in my right knee. It was mis-diagnosed by the doctor as minor damage so I went back to sport a few weeks later. The result was that when the true injury was found, it was much, much worse. The work to get into a condition for the operation, and then the post operation work to get my knee back to where it is now was so hard.

  • I'm excited about...

Getting back to playing sport after so long. This is explained by the really big paragraph above.

  • My feeling about the future

I am not usually optimistic about the future but weirdly I am. I guess that is because the world has been such a bad place recently that I honestly believe that things are going to get better and that has made me optimistic.

  • Something uncommon about me

I feel like I am uniquely mixed. Sometimes very shy, sometimes quite outgoing. Sometimes nerdy, sometimes quite active/sporty. Sometimes friendly, sometimes a complete loner. My hobbies range from football (soccer) to chess to improv. I feel like I am very varied in my hobbies and personality and I think that is kinda uncommon.

  • Childhood pleasures

Airplanes as a 2-5 year old and playing football/soccer ever since then. More recently Chess.

  • I feel concerned about...

I am concerned about the world at the moment. This is probably a common answer.

    (Written well before Covid)

  • As a child, I wish...

I wish I had taken exercise more seriously from a younger age.

  • Life regrets

The entire calendar year of 2019. I underachieved a lot.

  • I recently learnt...

    1+1=2

Okay not really. That was a bad joke. Sorry. I love learning though and so anything I write would quickly not become recent (at least for me at the moment). If you want to know the current answer to this, why not ask me?

  • My parents and me

The biggest difference between my parents and me is politically. They are on the political right and I am in the centre. I feel both sides of the political spectrum have valid points and the best mixture of them is the way to go.

  • Living abroad for one year

If I could I would try and go to as many countries as possible in that year for long enough to experience the culture of that country.

  • My opinion on human nature

I think that human nature depends on the environments that people grow up in. I don't think that humans have a nature. We are all different and that is what makes us special.

  • Over or underrated

    Controversial Opinion Alert.
I think that democracy is overrated and that it doesn't work. In theory it does but things like corruption and power-hungry people ruins it. That is also true of every other political system ever though and democracy is probably the best we have at the moment.

  • Favourite books/authors/films

    Favourite film: Probably the Martian
Favourite book: The Rafa Nadal autobiography (I don't watch tennis or play tennis but it was good)
Favourite author: My step grandmother is an author (Derin Atwood) so I am contractually obliged to say her 😉

  • A career without obstacles

Everything. Literally everything. I have dreamt about doing so many different things... Maybe a footballer (soccer player), politician or chess player... IDK.

  • 10 years from now

I hope that I will have many friends from around the world in 10 years time.

  • It was better before

I think that humans were much better at dealing with tough situations and rejections in the past.

  • It is better now

Most things are improving. Just look at technology. The fact that you are reading this right now. Also, if you are reading this right now and have read through everything else above too, what are you doing with your life 😂. I have written way too much on this page. If you are still here, and have done that, you might as well drop me a message and properly get to know me.
